Fifth-graders at Lake Forest Elementary School on Friday, Jan. 10, opened a time capsule memorializing the very year some of them were born: 2010.

Remember what happened that year?

Apple released its first iPad. Spain won the World Cup. Arnold Schwarzenegger was California’s governor.

Students read through newspaper clippings from 2010 and letters left by those who created the time capsule. They also learned about trends of the past by watching the DVD of a fashion show the former students left for them.

Friday’s event marked a 20 year tradition for Anmarie MacNevin, a fifth-grader teacher at the Saddleback Valley Unified School District campus. In 2000, she had her students create a time capsule that was opened by her class in 2010.

The 2010 class used a plastic container for its snapshot of time, which has been waiting for the 2020 students in MacNevin’s attic, she said.

And soon her current students will be preparing their own capsule to be opened at the next 10-year mark.

What would represent 2020?

“They would have to put the most popular TikTok things that kids could look up,” she said, referring to a video-sharing social media service that’s popular with today’s youth. “TikTok may not even be a thing later, but it’s huge now.”
